Software and Controls Engineer

Location: Barre, VT

WEG Electric Corp. has an excellent opportunity for a Software and Controls Engineer in our Bare, Vermont office to be engaged in the Software Development, Controls Design, Testing, Troubleshooting and Product Support of Utility Wind Turbine Control Systems.

The main responsibilities for this role are: * Design control algorithms; build and test control code for wind turbines, power converters and other devices; * Configure and/or code and test communications networks and control simulations; * Ensure software is properly controlled and released according to procedures and checklists; * Analyze field data and troubleshoot field problems; * Support field personnel, answering software and configuration related questions; * Develop PC-based scripts, applications and utilities; * Participate in Turbine Stage Gate and Design Development Process by attending and/or leading design reviews, developing and verifying system requirements, and managing portions of the turbine documentation package.

Most qualified candidates will possess a Bachelorís Degree in Electrical, Software, Mechanical, Systems Engineering or related discipline and have 2+ years of a prior working experience with wind turbines, power systems or other renewables as well as prior experience with software development approaches such as Agile, Scrum, CMMI. This role also requires solid knowledge of:

  • Computer and/or PLC programming: C/C++, PLC Structured text (IEC 61131-3), or similar
  • Use of revision control systems (subversion, git, etc.)
  • Scripting: python or similar languages
  • Object Oriented design methodology and implementation experience
  • Familiarity with priority-based operating systems (e.g. VxWorks)
  • Familiarity with communication protocols: CAN, RS422/485, Modbus TCP/RTU, or similar
  • Familiarity with software and controls documentation methods and tools such as process diagrams, state machine diagrams, flow charts, logic diagrams, data flow diagrams, or similar
  • Basic knowledge of electrical control circuitry and electronics
  • Basic use of oscilloscope
  • Working knowledge of sensors, actuators, embedded controllers
  • General troubleshooting and debugging skills
  • Thorough knowledge of MS Office applications, including Word and Excel
  • Matlab/Simulink knowledge desirable
